Secret Origins 01 - Spoiler-Free Review
Now, this was quite refreshing!
After getting burned with Forever Evil and it's underwhelming outcome, and getting deeply bored by Future's End, I decided to try yet another DC book and see if I could finally stick with at least one. This was actually a kiss goodbye, like the last chance to be impressed-- And did I get impressed!
It's no secret that I don't embrace the New 52 at all. They destroyed their entire history just to be all the hype for a couple of months. But then again, stories can always be told in a compelling way if the talent is there and if editorial doesn't interfere too much (meaning, keeping DiDio under chains). This is a good example of great storytelling, at least for me.
I have never been a fan of anthology books, but for a change, these short stories seem to have more heart than these huge crossovers that go on and on and on and have no ending nor relevant outcome.
This particular issue told origins with a "twist". Either because of the perspective in which they were told, or who told them, or the lingering theme in each one of these short stories. All I have to say is that they were endearing and I deeply missed that in DC Comics in particular. I sincerely hope they can keep it up. I'm so done with their books being actual dead ends.
So, I would suggest you give this new series a try. Issue 1 told stories for Superman, Dick Grayson and Supergirl and, yes, it was worth it.

Watch out! Mostly if you're a Robin
If you're a Titan, you might end up red.
If you're a JLIer, you may have never known your friends.
If you're a Robin, there's no way you'd fit in the 5-year continuum, so no, you're out.
And if you're Aquaman you just can't complain. You got it right.

Superhero Hotline featuring Robin
-Oh, Robin, you're just the guy I was looking for.
-I'm glad to serve, sir. Please state your emergency and we'll see what we can do for you.
-"We?" I was only thinking of you. It's not as if I wanted you two at the same time. It would be a little overwhelming--
-I'm the sidekick, sir. Batman is the one with the experience. I always follow his lead.
-Well, I hadn't considered it that way-- Would the two of you be okay with it?
-Sure, sir, you should see Batman do his acrobatics and he has all kind of wonderful toys in his Batbelt.
-Now, Robin, I think we have a deal. So, how you charge?
-Holy business, sir! We do it for free!
-What? As in a hobby?
-Of course, sir, we're devoted to the people.
-No wonder you have so many fans.
-You flatter us, sir, we just do what we can to please everybody.
-Well, when can I get the two of you into my place?
-Just state your emergency and address and we'll be on our way.
-Great!
From the other side of the Batcave:
-Robin, will you hang up the phone?
-Give me a second, sir. Batman, why should I do that? This man has an emergency!
-Just hang up, Robin. That call is not what you think it is.
-Holey phoney calls, Batman!
Back on the phone. Robin:
-Sir, I have to hang up. You're not tricking me this time! This death trap has the whole stink of the Penguin!
At the other side of the Batcave, Batman just sighed.

Batman Slaps Robin. Again.
Privacy and secrets are so 90's.
It's about time Batman joins us in this new era, when we can't hide a thing and there's always Facebook to spill every little dirty detail. Not that this was Batman's biggest secret, anyway.
So, have you had any privacy issues with Facebook? We heard super-heroes were having a real hard time, working on double profiles for both of their heroic and civilian identities. How has it worked for you?

The Big Bang's Theory About R.I.P.

With Sheldon following the clues behind Batman R.I.P., there's no doubt a solution will be found soon, or at least he'll wear the most appropriate t-shirt.
"The cancellation of Birds of Prey, Robin and Nightwing definitely has something to do with the whole picture. I'll run a few experiments and will get back to you."
Dr. Cooper went back to his lab with some comic books in his hands. We hope he can give us an answer soon.

Bad Batman, Bad

Batmommy was really upset because Batman supposedly assaulted her and Batgirl with a Batarang and a Shark Repellent Bat Spray.
"Fame went to his head", claimed the Bat Mother as she was throwing some of his son's stuff out of the Batcave and setting a Batman the Dark Knight poster on fire. "I only wanted a couple of millions and that's how he pays me. That two-faced son of mine! Since there's no justice in the world, I'll get my revenge!" We asked her to show us her bruises but she said she was a fast healer much a-la-Wolverine and there was nothing to be seen. That's when we started wondering if she was a mutant.
We tried to ask Robin about this incident but the Boy Wonder just rolled his eyes at us and left.

The Joker Threatens Movie Viewers

Earlier today, we got an anonymous letter with a little note in a Joker card that demanded us to publish it or else… We're too happy to be alive so we published it in its entirety. Read it at your own risk.
With the imminent showing of 'Batman: The Dark Knight', I am forced to address all of you, people about to die. That movie not only shows a non-thin version of myself, with a smile that doesn't cover half of my face, but it lacks my name, the name of the true hero, in its title. It could have been named 'Joker: The Killing Joke', or 'Joker Laughs Last', or simply 'Joker Kicks Batman's @$$', but no, we got the regular unfunny title. Why oh why? This is the last insult to the biggest icon of Gotham City. Who's killed more people than me? Who? Who????? I demand some recognition and if I'm getting none, I'll have my payback. In the meanwhile, let me tell you a joke: A batman walks into a bar holding a little robin by the hand. Then, a joker gets into the place and sets little robin on fire. What's the name of the bar? Kentucky Fried Robin! Nya-hahahahahaha!
Okay, I'm out of subject and I've ranted long enough. Here's the deal. You go see the movie, you die. It's as simple as that. There are no free passes into the movie and no one will get out alive. That's a promise and you know I like to joke but I don't lie, otherwise I'd be the Liar and that just wouldn't be funny.
Watch out, Batman lovers, the joke will be on you!
Your friend,
DJ
(Dah Jokah!)
